U pdate Monday 11/5 : Since this is a boring post, literally about an appliance, I’ll cut to the chase. They’re replacing the whole fridge at no cost to us. YAY! It will still take 2-3 weeks for it to arrive, but whatever. Good on you, Bosch. Way to do the right thing.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m sure you’ve all been sitting on the edges of your collective seats, waiting for an update from me, on my fridge that broke on September 8th. No? Too bad, here it is:

Bosch: It looks like we do have an updated ETA for you, sir, and it’s 12/11.

Me: Excuse me? Like, not the 12th of November, but 12/11 like December 12th?

B: Yes, sir, that would be the twelfth of December.

M: [after a pause of shock and a deep breath] Do you realize that the original issue happened OVER THREE MONTHS from that date? How do you think you would be feeling if you had a wife and two small kids at home and you had no refrigerator for THREE MONTHS?

B: Yes, sir I’d be pretty upset, too, sir.

M: Well... where do we go from here? I am not going to patiently wait another five weeks. I’ve been extremely patient thus far. I’m all done being patient.

B: Let me put you through to a supervisor.........

On a related note: the fridge has a 1-year comprehensive warranty. Then they have a 5-year extension for all electronic parts. But if an electronic part causes the whole thing not to work, and three attempts have already been made to repair the appliance with various electronic parts, what if that elusive other part doesn’t fix it? I say, they have to give me a new fridge. You can’t tell me that only the part that’s disabling the whole unit from working AT ALL is the only thing that’s covered, full stop. If it doesn’t solve the problem, it can’t end there, can it?

I mean, maybe. But I’m going to argue vehemently that it doesn’t. And they did seem agreeable to paying for some of the other expenses I’ve incurred as a result of this, like buying an entire second fridge to get us by.

Stay tuned for another riveting installment of The Great Refrigerator Saga of 2018 And Hopefully Not Including 2019 For Fuck’s Sake

On a related note: the fridge has a 1-year comprehensive warranty.

Dec 11th rolls around, “oh, your new ETA is three months out.”

Three months later: Your out of warranty! SOL! Sorry pal!

well, one problem: the “one year” was up in 2017. But the electronics are 5 years. Also, it’s well-documented that the issue first occurred on 9/8... but still. I’m well prepared for that argument.

My favorite part was the tech visit on 10/11. He came to try out the replacement parts, but he’s not really trained in the specifics. So he calls the tech line, and they’re all in training, all day. If a repair person’s only avenue for diagnostics is to call a tech line, then you can’t have ALL the people off-duty during business hours at the same time! Am I wrong?

So what you’re saying is that this will drag on for another 3.5 years?

He was moderately helpful. He said he would exhaust all possible avenues to get a part sooner than December. And if not, he’d push it to “the managers” and see if they can come up with a better resolution than waiting another 5 weeks for a possible repair that might not even work. Namely, a new fridge. I don’t know what else they’d do, other than replenish my extended warranty which I’ve had to tap into quite a bit already. I don’t want to waste the whole amount of the extended warranty on this stupid issue that is caused by an under- manufacturer’s warranty part failing in the first place.

At what point do you say to them, “Fuck it, come take the machine away  and give me all my money back” and then go get something different?

That’s when it somehow decides to start rapidly spoiling the stuff we’ve been keeping in it, like bread, fruit, cookies, etc. that would otherwise be on the counter or in the pantry. It’s become our second pantry, which is... convenient, in a twisted, roundabout way.

Good question. The one I bought as a temporary replacement is working fine and it’s 10 feet away in the dining room. So we’re surviving fine, but I’m annoyed all the same.

I don’t want to spend money out of pocket, so pushing on Bosch is my next best option. We can live with the other fridge until they come up with a resolution and being patient has been an asset so far. Now I’m taking the angle of, I’m done being patient but not done being reasonable.

I would have expected it from maybe Samsung, about who I have heard horror stories, but maybe no others.

I hope I don’t jinx it, but my fridge is a low priced Hotpoint model installed in all the units when my building was built in 2003. I’ve lived here for over 10 years (I think the first to permanently live in the unit) , and the fridge makes nary a peep, just keeps on going.  My grandma has a beer fridge in her garage they bought in 1965 that keeps chugging along.

The ones that keep working are those with a simple thermostatic switch to control temperature. Those are very simple electromechanical devices and just... work.

Ours isn’t very fancy but does have a little control panel with a circuit board. And there are two small, very simple circuit boards on the back. Somewhere in there lies the problem.

It varies by state and I don’t remember where you live but threaten small claims court for the value of the fridge. Some states won’t let a cor poration send a lawyer but you then instead get some random exec that doesn’t know what he’s doing. Again, depends on the state for limits and lawyer rules but it’s an option you could look into.

I’m hoping they call Monday to say “we’ve decided just to replace your fridge.” I don’t think I have time to go to court, but then again my sister is bar certified in the state so I’ve got... something anyway. That would be kind of a last resort.

Well yeah, kind of. After the first parts were delayed due to a hurricane (no one’s fault, arguably) I went into “how do I solve this for myself, long-term” mode and got the spare fridge off Craigslist.

From there, I was excessively patient - because I could be - and now here we are.
